It seems like everyone has a family story that grows in the telling. Whether it’s Aunt Susan’s famous run from the law, or that mysterious sepia-toned photograph labeled with a name nobody recognizes, family stories—and legends—are part of what brings color into our ancestry.
It can be difficult searching down all of the threads of a family’s past, finding the census data, military records, and immigration manifests that fill in the bare-bones of your family’s story. But it’s a challenge that’s well worth the effort. Out of the data, a picture emerges—people who lived and loved, who pursued the hope of a better life in a country that was foreign to them, but full of promise. How wonderful it is, to see these people get the chance to tell a little bit of their life story.
